Base64 Encoder/Decoder
Encode or decode Base64 strings.
About this tool
The Base64 Encoder/Decoder converts text or binary data to Base64 encoding and decodes Base64 strings back to plain text. Base64 is widely used for embedding images in CSS/HTML, encoding API credentials, and transmitting binary data over text channels.
How it works
- Choose Encode or Decode mode.
- Paste your text or Base64 string into the input field.
- The output appears instantly in the result box.
- Click Copy to copy the result to your clipboard.
Example use cases
- API authentication header: Encode 'username:password' to Base64 to create a Basic Authentication header: Authorization: Basic dXNlcm5hbWU6cGFzc3dvcmQ=
- Decode JWT payload: Decode the second segment of a JWT token (between the two dots) to read the claims in plain JSON.
Frequently asked questions
Is Base64 encoding the same as encryption?
No - Base64 is a reversible encoding scheme. Anyone with the Base64 string can decode it instantly. Do not use it to protect sensitive data.
Why does encoded output end with = or ==?
Base64 groups input into 3-byte blocks. When the input length isn't a multiple of 3, padding characters (=) are added to complete the final group.
