Reading Time Calculator - Free Online Tool

Estimate reading time from text length and pace.

About this tool

Estimate reading time from pasted text or a manually entered word count and a reading pace in words per minute (WPM). The result is a planning estimate, not a measured duration for a particular reader.

How it works

  1. Choose whether to paste the passage or enter its word count directly.
  2. Set reading speed in words per minute to reflect the pace you want to estimate.
  3. Review the estimated duration and, when using pasted text, the count used in the calculation.

Example use cases

  • Short article: A 900-word article at an assumed pace of 225 words per minute has an estimated reading time of 4 minutes.
  • Adjusting for pace: A 1,200-word passage takes an estimated 6 minutes at 200 WPM, or 8 minutes at 150 WPM. Use a pace that suits the text and purpose.

Frequently asked questions

Can I enter a word count without pasting the text?

Yes. Select the manual word-count option and enter a whole number of words. The calculator divides that count by your WPM setting.

Is the displayed time exact?

No. It is based on the entered or counted words and an assumed pace. Reading difficulty, pauses, and individual reading style can change the actual time.
