Hash Generator
Generate MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-512.
About this tool
The Hash Generator computes MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, and SHA-512 cryptographic hash digests for any input string. Hashes are used to verify data integrity, store passwords securely (using bcrypt/Argon2 in production), and fingerprint content.
How it works
- Type or paste your input text into the field.
- Select the hash algorithm: MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, or SHA-512.
- The hash is computed instantly and displayed in hex format.
- Copy the hash for verification or comparison.
Example use cases
- File integrity check: Generate a SHA-256 hash of a downloaded file's name/content and compare it to the publisher's checksum to verify the file has not been tampered with.
- Content fingerprinting: Hash a document's text with SHA-256 to create a fixed-length fingerprint that can detect any modification to the original.
Frequently asked questions
Can I reverse a hash to get the original text back?
No - cryptographic hashes are one-way functions. You cannot reverse a hash to recover the original input (short of trying every possible input).
Is MD5 safe for passwords?
No - MD5 is fast and vulnerable to rainbow table attacks. Use a slow, salted password hashing algorithm (bcrypt, Argon2) in any real application.
