Internet Download Time Calculator - Free Online Tool

Estimate download time from file size and speed.

About this tool

Estimate the ideal duration for transferring a file at a constant connection speed. Enter file size in decimal MB or GB and download speed in Mbps (megabits per second); the result is shown as a duration and seconds.

How it works

  1. Enter file size in MB or GB and choose the matching unit.
  2. Enter download speed in Mbps, not MB/s (megabytes per second).
  3. Review the ideal transfer time; the displayed duration rounds up to a whole second.

Example use cases

  • Large file: A 1.5 GB decimal file at a steady 60 Mbps takes an ideal 200 seconds, or 3 minutes 20 seconds, before real-world transfer overhead.
  • Smaller file: A 500 MB decimal file at 20 Mbps takes an ideal 200 seconds. This assumes the connection sustains the entered speed for the whole transfer.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between Mbps and MB/s?

Mbps means megabits per second, while MB/s means megabytes per second. There are 8 bits in a byte, so do not enter a displayed MB/s value as if it were Mbps; convert it to the calculator's unit first.

Why might my download take longer?

The estimate assumes constant full-speed transfer. Network overhead, Wi-Fi conditions, congestion, server limits, and changes in connection speed can increase actual download time.
